BaShe Peasts the Entire Fish? (now known as 修哥魚鍋烤魚店)

No joke, this place IS called "BaShe Peasts the Entire Fish". This name is a classic example of Chinglish - where the words are sometimes directly translates from Chinese or sometimes get made up into completely new words combining the Chinese and English meanings together which is often found in HK and China. Here we get the word "Peast", by looking at the Chinese name of the restaurant, I am guessing it means "SiChuan Roasts the Entire Fish". [BaShe is an another name for SiChuan, a province in Southwestern China famous for its spicy cuisine.

If we look past the name,  "BaShe Peasts the Entire Fish" is a hidden gem inside the Whampoa district in Hung Hom. It is a wonderful place to head to if you are a big fan of fish and spicy food. They are famous for their grilled mud carp for three sizes: small, medium or whole, you can also pick the level of spiciness to your taste: mild, spicy or extra spicy. I personally recommend having a whole roasted fish as the smaller fish have more bones and the pricking bones may make your dining experience less enjoyable. Pick the ingredients to your taste and your roasted mud carp will arrive within a couple of minutes.
The grilled mud carp is served in a sizzling hot dish with bubbling spicy fish soup and onions in the broth. I would highly recommend trying the grilled fish with Chinese black beans (shown in the photo above) with your choice level of spiciness, it will come with some chilly peppers and some nicely chopped parsley and scallions along with a nice bowl of jasmine rice which is enough to satisfy your tastebuds for the whole day.

The best way to eat this dish is to start with the head (if you are a fan of fish heads ---> meeeee!) and the tail as they have more flavor to them (takes less time for the flavor to seep into the fish),  make sure you have a bowl of jasmine rice to have the fish and the sauce with as you slowly work towards the middle of the fish. By far this is my favorite dish and I would actually crave for this every other week. It's THAT good. [see the photo below? :P]

They are also famous for their fish noodles in fish broth. My other personal favorite is the fish head / fish belly noodles with tofu in fish broth. Their fish broth are to DIE for (which they nicely incorporate this into most of their dishes such as the roasted mud carp above).

However, their interior is a bit cramped, and during busy hours it may be a bit frustrating to get a seat, or enjoy your meal in peace and quiet without people nudging you at the other table. But at the end of the day, it's all worth it. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong!!

NOTE: Bashe Peasts the Entire Fish is now called 修哥魚鍋烤魚店 (They don't have an English name now, so just call it "Sau Gor" in Cantonese)
